Best Compression Socks for Nurses: An Honest Buyer's Guide
What to look for, what the mmHg number means for a 12-hour shift, the fit test that takes ten seconds - and the honest reason we are not going to hand you a ranked list of ten brands.
Search this and you get twenty listicles ranking ten brands, all written by people who have never worked a 7a-to-7p. We're not going to do that — partly because we sell socks and a ranked list from us would be worthless, and partly because the brand matters less than four things almost nobody explains.
Here's what actually decides whether a pair works for you on the floor.
1. The mmHg number — and why higher isn't better
mmHg is the pressure the knit applies. Anything sold as compression will list a range.

Here's the finding that should change how you shop. A randomised trial on 12-hour standing workers (Garcia 2021) tested 15–20 and 20–30 mmHg against ordinary socks. The ordinary-sock group developed measurable leg fatigue, swelling and discomfort across the shift. Both compression groups didn't — and the researchers noted similar benefit at the lower level, concluding the lower pressure may be sufficient.
Which means: the firmest sock you can find is not the best sock you can buy. It's just the one you're most likely to peel off at lunch. And a compression sock in your locker does nothing at all.
2. Graduated, not just tight
Graduated means firmest at the ankle, easing as it goes up the calf. That gradient gives pooled blood a direction — up, toward the heart.
A sock that squeezes evenly isn't graduated, it's just tight. And a regular sock with a grippy top band is actively the wrong shape: it's tightest exactly where a compression sock should be lightest. That's why a tight normal sock leaves a ring on your calf and a properly fitted compression sock shouldn't.
Mayo Clinic also notes that stockings rising to just below the knee help limit lower-leg swelling from fluid buildup — which is why knee-high is the standard for shift work, not ankle or crew.

3. Fit — and the ten-second test
This is where most purchases go wrong, and it has nothing to do with brand.
Compression socks are sized by calf girth, not shoe size. Two nurses in the same size 8 can be four inches apart around the calf. Four inches is the difference between support and a red band under the knee.
Measure the widest part of your calf, in the morning, standing, tape snug but not biting. Both legs — use the bigger number. Between sizes, size up.
The fit test, at the end of a shift
Take them off and look at your leg. Skin should be even — no deep groove where the top band sat, no red ring, no dents that stay for twenty minutes. Firm pressure at the ankle is correct. A line carved under your knee is not: that's a sock too small, or a band folded over.
And never fold the top down. A doubled cuff doubles the pressure at that one point — a supportive sock becomes a tourniquet.
4. How many pairs — the thing listicles never mention
Compression works by fitting precisely, which means washing after every full shift. Body oils and sweat break down elastane, and a stretched-out compression sock has quietly stopped being one.
So one pair means: wear, wash, go without tomorrow. That's how a good pair ends up in a drawer.
Six to eight pairs is roughly a week of clean socks between loads. If you're comparing prices, compare the price of a working rotation — not of one pair.
Care rules that decide whether a pair lasts three months or twelve: cold wash, air dry, no tumble dryer, no fabric softener. Heat is what kills elastane. And replace every three to six months of daily wear — elastic fatigue is invisible, the sock looks fine long after it stopped applying real pressure. The tell: if they're noticeably easier to pull on than when new, they're done.

The rule that beats every brand comparison
Put them on before your shift, not during it.
Overnight, lying flat, your body reabsorbs the fluid that pools in your legs. At 6am your legs are the smallest they'll be all day — and that's the size the sock was knit for.
Pull the same sock on at 3pm, over a leg that's already swollen, and it has to squeeze something bigger than it was built for. Hard to get on, feels like a clamp, half the benefit already gone. Then the sock gets blamed.
If a pair ever felt fine in the packet and murderous by hour four, this was probably why — not the brand.
What we won't tell you
We won't say compression socks treat or cure anything. We won't say they prevent clots — the evidence doesn't support that wording. And we won't repeat the “more energy, sharper focus at hour eleven” line: there is no evidence for it. We went looking, and the one study that measured mood while wearing compression found no meaningful difference.
What the evidence does cover is narrower and genuinely useful: less swelling and less end-of-shift heaviness in people who stand for a living. A separate trial on 108 hairdressers at 15–20 mmHg found reduced pain and heaviness — and notably, the symptom relief held even when swelling hadn't fully dropped.
And they're not for everyone. Talk to your doctor first if you have peripheral artery disease, diabetes with nerve involvement, neuropathy or reduced sensation in your feet. You already know this better than we do — but reduced sensation means a too-tight sock can do damage you won't feel.
Give a pair three weeks before you judge it
What compression gives you isn't a feeling that arrives — it's one that stops. The heaviness at hour nine that doesn't show up. The ankles that aren't puffed over your shoe line at handover. The groove that isn't there at bedtime.
Absence is almost impossible to notice. Your brain flags new problems; it never tells you “that thing that used to ache didn't ache today.” That's why “I don't think they did much” is such a common verdict from people they were working for.
Write two lines on day one about how your legs feel at handover. Read them on day 21. Then work one shift without them — that's the comparison that settles it.
