What the evidence covers, and where it stops: A Cochrane review (12 randomized trials, 2,918 travelers, high-certainty evidence) found graduated compression stockings sharply reduce symptomless DVT on flights of 4+ hours — 3 cases in stockings versus 47 without. 4. You're pregnant
Talk to your OB before wearing compression during pregnancy. This section is information, not medical advice.
The pain: Everyone warns you about the swelling, the heaviness, the mood swings. Almost nobody tells you they feed each other. Your legs ache, so you move less. You move less, so they swell more. Nothing you own fits your feet by evening. What compression is for here: the heaviness and the swelling. 7. You have wide calves and every compression sock has failed you
The pain: You've bought compression socks before. They stopped at mid-calf and would not go further. Or they made it up and cut a red band into your leg that hurt more than the original problem. So you concluded compression socks "aren't for you."
They were. The sizing wasn't.
Most compression socks are built for a narrow calf range and then labeled by shoe size — which is the wrong measurement entirely. Two people with identical shoe sizes can be four inches apart in calf girth.

Who should check with a doctor first

How to put them on
The number one complaint about compression socks in every brand's reviews is "I couldn't get them on." It's almost always technique, not the sock.
Do not grab the top and haul them up your leg. That's how people give up, tear seams, and end up with the sock bunched at the ankle doing nothing.

1. Do it in the morning. First thing, before you've been on your feet — ideally before you even get out of bed. This is the single biggest factor.
2. Dry legs, dry hands. A compression sock will not slide onto damp skin. Just showered? Dry off completely. A little talc or cornstarch helps.
3. Turn the sock inside out down to the heel. Reach inside, pinch the heel, pull the leg of the sock back through itself. You're now holding a short cup with the heel at the bottom.
4. Get your foot in and set the heel first. Slide your foot into that cup and position the heel pocket over your actual heel before anything else. Wrong heel placement makes everything above it feel wrong.
5. Roll — don't pull — up your leg. Unfold the sock upward, working around your leg with both hands, easing the fabric along in stages. It should unroll onto your leg, not be dragged.
6. Smooth out every wrinkle. Never fold the top down. Wrinkles concentrate pressure into a line. A folded cuff doubles the compression at that exact spot and turns a supportive sock into a tourniquet.
If your hands or grip make this hard: rubber dishwashing gloves are the single best trick there is — the grip lets you move the fabric with almost no force, and nurses have been doing it for decades. A sock aid or donning frame helps if bending is difficult. Sitting on the edge of the bed with your foot on a low stool beats bending all the way down.
Taking them off: roll them down from the top rather than pulling from the toe.
When to wear them, and for how long
Put them on in the morning. This one rule decides everything else.
Overnight, lying flat, gravity stops pulling fluid into your legs and your body reabsorbs it. When you wake up, your legs are at their smallest all day. The moment you're upright, fluid starts accumulating again — slowly, invisibly, all day long.
So a sock put on at 8am holds your leg at its best size. The same sock at 5pm is being asked to squeeze a leg that has already swollen — uncomfortable, hard to get on, and half the benefit already gone.

Days 1–3 — the adjustment

Getting the size right
Measure your calf. Do not guess from your shoe size.

This is the second-biggest reason compression socks fail people. Shoe size tells you about your foot. A knee-high compression sock lives on your calf. Two people who both wear a size 10 can be four inches apart in calf girth — and four inches is the difference between "supportive" and "cutting off my leg."
How to measure, in 30 seconds: Do it in the morning, before your legs have swollen. Stand up, weight even on both feet. Wrap a tape measure around the widest part of your calf — usually about a third of the way up from the ankle. Snug against the skin, not squeezing. Legs aren't identical, so measure both and use the larger number. No tape measure? Wrap a phone charging cable or a piece of string around your calf, mark where it meets, and hold it against a ruler.

Between two sizes? Go up. A slightly roomier sock still works; a too-tight sock sits in a drawer. Calf over 24 inches? You need the Wide Calf line, not XXL — sizing up within the standard range won't solve it. Shoe size and body weight are secondary; calf girth decides.
Care
Machine wash cold, gentle cycle, mesh bag if you have one. Air dry — heat is what kills elastane, and a tumble dryer will shorten their life more than anything else you do. No fabric softener or bleach (softener coats the fibres and degrades the stretch). Wash after each full day of wear — compression works by fitting precisely, and body oils break that down. Replace every 3–6 months of regular wear: elastic fatigue is invisible, and the sock still looks fine after it's stopped doing its job. If they're noticeably easier to put on than when new, they've lost their compression.
Troubleshooting
Before you decide they didn't work, check here. Nine times out of ten there's a fix.
"They're too tight."
Four questions, in this order:
1. What time did you put them on? Afternoon or evening onto an already-swollen leg is the number one cause. Try again first thing tomorrow — for most people the sock feels like a different product.
2. Did you measure your calf, or estimate from shoe size? Measure now. Above your size's range? Message us and we'll get you the right size — keep the ones you have.
3. Is the top folded over or rolled? A doubled cuff creates a pressure band. Unroll it fully.
4. Is it firm, or is it painful? Firm at the ankle is correct and expected. Painful is not.
Take them off immediately and speak to a doctor if your toes go numb or tingly, your skin changes colour, or you have actual pain rather than pressure.
"I couldn't get them on."

"They roll down or slide."
Usually too large, or not fully unrolled. First make sure you've rolled them all the way up with no folded cuff. If they still slide, you're likely a size down. Also check they haven't simply lost elasticity with age.
"My feet get hot."
Honest answer: compression is denser than a regular sock, and in closed shoes on a long day you'll notice it. "I don't feel any difference."
