Poor Circulation in Legs and Feet: What Actually Helps
Cold feet, heavy legs, ankles that puff by evening. What is usually going on, the moves that work, where compression fits - and the signs that mean you should stop reading and call a doctor instead.
Cold feet in a warm room. Legs that feel heavy by four in the afternoon. Ankles that puff up over your socks and leave a groove that's still there at bedtime. Somewhere along the way you started calling it “poor circulation” and left it at that.
Let's be precise about what that phrase usually means, what genuinely helps, and — importantly — the version of it that is not a sock problem at all.
Read this part first. “Poor circulation” covers two different things. One is venous — blood struggling to get back up your legs. That's the everyday, gravity-and-desk-job version, and it's what this article is about. The other is arterial — blood struggling to get down into your legs. That one is a medical condition, compression can make it worse, and it needs a doctor rather than a shopping decision. How to tell them apart is further down.
The everyday version: your calf pump has the day off
Blood gets from your heart down to your feet easily — gravity does the work. Getting it back up is the hard part, and your heart isn't doing that job alone.
The main pump for the return trip is your calf muscle. Every time it contracts, it squeezes the deep veins and pushes blood upward; one-way valves stop it falling back. Walking works that pump with every step.
Sit still for hours, or stand still for hours, and the pump goes quiet. Blood pools in your lower legs, pressure rises in the veins, and fluid seeps out into the surrounding tissue. That's the heaviness. That's the ankle that's a different shape at 6pm than it was at 8am.
Harvard Health describes the mechanism in one line: “By squeezing your legs, compression socks help the valves in your blood vessels do their job.”
Two things worth knowing, because they surprise people:
Standing still is harder on your veins than walking. A person planted at a workbench is doing something harder on their circulation than a person walking a corridor all day.
It isn't a fitness problem. It happens to people who train four days a week. It's fluid dynamics plus a chair.

What actually helps, ranked honestly
1. Move your calves, in small amounts, often. This beats everything, and we'll say so even though we sell socks. NIOSH lists several interventions for prolonged standing and then states plainly that dynamic movement appeared to be the best solution.
You don't need a workout. You need contractions:
• Ten heel raises. Up on your toes, down. Fifteen seconds. Do them while the kettle boils.
• Ankle rolls. Ten each way, sitting at a desk. Nobody sees you doing it.
• Stand up every hour. Not a walk — just up, thirty seconds, down.
• Take the long way. Every trip you can lengthen is free pump work.
2. Graduated compression, put on in the morning. This is what we make, so weigh it accordingly — but it's the intervention with the most direct evidence for this exact problem. A study measuring leg volume at 7:00am and again at 7:00pm across working days found compression significantly reduced the fluid built up over the day, in sitting, standing and mixed positions.
The rule that decides whether it works for you: morning, before you've been on your feet. Overnight your body reabsorbs the fluid in your legs, so first thing they're at their smallest and the sock fits as designed. The same sock at 5pm has to squeeze a leg that's already swollen — harder to get on, uncomfortable, half the benefit gone.
3. Feet up, above your hips, for fifteen minutes. Free, and gravity finally works for you instead of against you. Lie on the floor with your legs up the sofa.
4. Hydration and the salt shaker. Dehydration thickens things and doesn't help; a very high-salt day shows up in your ankles by evening. Neither is dramatic, both are real.
5. Don't sit with your legs crossed for hours. Minor, but free.

🔴 When it is not a sock problem
This is the section we'd want a family member to read.
See a doctor before buying anything if:
• One leg swells and the other doesn't, or swelling comes on suddenly
• You have pain in your calf when you walk that stops when you rest — that pattern points at arterial circulation, not venous, and compression is the wrong tool
• Your feet or toes look pale, bluish or dusky, or feel cold in a warm room in a way that doesn't settle
• You have sores or cuts on your feet or legs that heal slowly or not at all
• There's numbness or reduced feeling in your feet
And talk to your doctor first regardless if you have: peripheral artery disease (PAD), diabetes — especially with any nerve involvement — neuropathy, or a diagnosed vascular condition. Reduced sensation is the important one: if you can't feel a sock that's too tight, you can't protect yourself from it.

What compression does and doesn't do
What the evidence covers: reduced swelling accumulated over a day of standing or sitting, and reduced heaviness and aching in people who spend long hours upright. That holds up across several randomised trials at the everyday 15–25 mmHg level.
What we won't claim: that compression socks treat, cure or prevent any condition. That they prevent blood clots — the evidence does not support that wording. Or the “more energy, better focus” line you'll see from other brands: there's no evidence for it. We went looking, and the one study that measured mood found no meaningful difference.
Also worth being straight about: compression manages a symptom. It doesn't fix a vein that isn't working, and it isn't a substitute for moving.
If you try it, do it properly
Size by calf, not shoe. A knee-high sock lives on your calf; two people in the same shoe size can be four inches apart around the leg. Measure the widest part, in the morning, standing, tape snug but not biting. Both legs, use the bigger number. Between sizes, go up.
Morning on, bedtime off. Twelve to sixteen hours. Don't sleep in them unless a doctor has told you to — lying flat, gravity isn't the problem any more.
Give it three weeks. Here's the honest reason: what compression gives you is the absence of a familiar discomfort, and absence is almost impossible to notice. Your brain flags new problems; it never tells you “that thing that used to ache didn't ache today.”
So write two lines on day one about how your legs feel at 6pm, read them on day 21, then skip a day. That comparison is the only honest one you'll get.
